Friends, Neighbors & Community Members:
On November 5, 2024, the residents of Malibu will elect 3 members to the Malibu City Council. I am running for re-election, and I am excited about the prospect of serving the residents of Malibu for another 4 years.
I am the only Councilmember who is a lawyer, and I am the only lawyer running for election this year. I also am the only lawyer elected to the Malibu City Council for more than a decade. By contrast, most cities have at least one member who is a lawyer, and many have multiple lawyers. That is because City Councils are responsible for adopting, implementing and enforcing the law. It also is important to have lawyers on the City Council to act as a check on the City Attorney, to raise questions for the City Attorney that non-lawyers will not know to ask, and to push back when the City Attorney's advice is questionable. I have served all of those important objectives over the past four years and I will continue to do so for the next four years when I am re-elected.
During my first term on the Malibu City Council, I have championed many causes important to Malibu residents. I proposed multiple measures to promote the health, safety and welfare of the community, including (i) measures to improve safety on PCH, (ii) measures that have helped to materially reduce the number of individuals living unhoused in public in Malibu, (iii) measures to help reduce the risk of another wildfire from threatening lives and property in Malibu, and (iv) work behind the scenes to avoid the conversion of a County facility for non-violent teen-aged offenders into a prison camp for violent offenders through the age of 25. I will continue to build on that progress for the next four years when I am re-elected.
I also have worked to protect and preserve Malibu's fragile rural environment, to ensure that Malibu's financial resources are properly devoted to improving the lives of the residents, and to make Malibu's local government perform with transparency, accountability and integrity. There is, however, much more work to be done. I will continue to serve these important objectives for the next four years when I am re-elected.
When you vote in November (or by mail in October), I hope you will VOTE TO RE-ELECT BRUCE LEE SILVERSTEIN TO MALIBU CITY COUNCIL. Also, please encourage your friends to do the same. Without regard to how you vote, however, please be sure to vote. It is a critically important right that you have, and it should be exercised regularly and with great care.
Please take a minute to read my Candidate Statement and some of the Endorsements of Malibu Residents appearing on this website below. As always, you should feel free to reach out to me with any questions or comments. I can be reached by email at bruce@brucesilverstein.org.
Lastly, if you are up to it, a contribution to my campaign is most appreciated. That can be accomplished by clicking on the CONTRIBUTE link at the top corner of this page.
This will mainly be a grassroots campaign, as it was when I was elected in 2020, and your support is critical.
Stay Safe & Stay Well,
Bruce
CANDIDATE STATEMENT OF BRUCE SILVERSTEIN
CANDIDATE FOR MALIBU CIY COUNCIL
I am running for re-election to Malibu City Council, having received the highest number of votes out of a field of eight candidates in 2020.
I am the only City Council member who is a lawyer, and I bring my considerable legal skills to bear on every matter on which I work for the benefit of residents.
I have fought to make Malibu safer for the residents.
I have opposed developments that threaten Malibu’s fragile environment.
I have pressed to make local government transparent, accountable, and ethical.
I have been accessible to the residents, and I have consistently and conscientiously worked to further the interests of the residents, and not those of monied special interests.
I have formed relationships with elected and appointed officials outside of Malibu, which will be helpful to Malibu in the years to come.
The residents of Malibu have not re-elected an incumbent City Councilmember since 2016. As such, there is a pressing need for some continuity, as new Councilmembers face a steep learning curve that takes years to climb.
In short, I have worked hard to protect, preserve, and improve Malibu for its residents, and I will continue to do so when I am re-elected.
